Random Advice for Future Builders

So, the big lesson over the last couple of weeks has been to accept the fact that this is not a Lego kit. Its a loosely bundled collection of parts with some pictures that often don’t reference those parts that somehow will end up as a working car. Pretty much every piece so far has needed some form of fettling ?

For future car builders:

  • The front of the top wishbones bolts on but also holds the bracket for the headlights – read ahead a few pages is the lesson here
  • Headlights cables are a b*tch to get through the bracket and the grommet which goes in the hole nearest the headlight) doesn’t fit so cut it in half and glue it in place
  • Top wishbone cant be connected to hub unless the bottom wishbone is compressed so I jacked up the lower wishbone whilst a heavy bloke (cue entry of eldest – cheers Ben) sat on the centre cross brace of the car (above the single axle stand)
  • The bolts to hold the heater box in place are 5mm not 6 as per the instructions
  • Be careful undoing the main nut and washer on the back of the hub as mine quickly cross-threaded and made the hub unusable. Sorted by Derek of course ?
  • Get yourself a set of metric and UNF taps and dies and use them wherever you are bolting into the pre-threaded holes
  • A soft faced hammer is the tool I used the most.
  • Interlocking floor tiles are amazingly comfortable and insulating from the cold – although they can be a pain when you want to move a loaded engine hoist on them.  I covered  my  floor  in  them  for  £20 from B&Q
